2 March – 9 March 2020| Uber £470.99 | Bolt £196.30 | Ola £522.15 |Total £1189.44
Great start to month and my busiest week yet, just missing out on £1200. This was again over 6 days, having sunday off and only working a few hours on Saturday night.
All Apps where buzzing this week, especially Uber and Ola with a constant stream off work. Even more satisfying for me was that every job I did was in the suburbs and I didnt even get close to central London. My strategy of staying Local is deffinitly working out making this job a lot easier and infinitely more enjoyable.
9 March – 16 March 2020| Uber £195.99| Bolt £110.83 | Ola £883.96 |Total £1190.78
Another great week with nearly identical earnings as last week just missing out on £1200. Just like last week, I stuck to my strategy of completely avoiding central london and tried to stick to the suburbs of North London and Hertfordshire as much as possible.
On wednesday it suddenly went deadly quiet which carried on into Thursday. I still managed to somehow hit my daily targets but it seemed like the Corona Virus was going to start having an effect on business. Thankfully it was only a small blip as I ended up hitting £250 on Friday in about 11 hours online. Ola was particularly busy that day with takings of £207.48 just on the one app.
If you were to believe all the negativity online on the Uber forums, you’d think that we are all doomed and it’s time to go find a ‘proper job’. There where drivers even talking about taking the next few weeks off because there is no point in working because it is so quiet.
Guys!….. Look at my numbers. I’m not doing nothing special.
I’m just going out there every morning at 5am with the right attitude working hard for 10-12 hours.
Don’t underestimate the value of a positive mindset which In my experience, in all my places of work has been the difference between the winners and the losers.
16 March – 23 March 2020| Uber £364.14| Bolt £85.85 | Ola £539.28 |Total £989.27
Hi guys. Hope you are all well.
It has been a crazy week this week as the Corona virus has taken over, not only the country but the whole world. What we thought was a bit of flu has now become a pandemic with many cities around the world going on lockdown with people unable to leave their homes.
In the Uk, all pubs, clubs, bars, restaurants, major retailers and small business have had to shut their doors, collectively making millions of people unemployed.
It seems surreal writing this, but this is actually happening.
The government has stepped up and has offered to pay employees 80% of their salary which has come as a huge relief to many but for self employed people like us drivers, there has been no talk of help.
As much as I would have loved to stay at home with my family and self isolated as recommended by the government, I’ve been forced to carry on driving due to the lack of support for us private hire drivers working in the gig economy.
Not knowing how long we are going to be allowed to work, I made a concerted effort to push as hard as I could this week. Even though it was a lot quieter than usual, I still managed to hit between £170 and £200 a day monday to friday and finished off the week with only 3 hours on Saturday. Considering the negative impact the Corona Virus has had on business, I am really happy to have finished the week with just under £1000.
If we are still allowed to work next week, I suspect it is going to be extremely quiet with most people staying at home, self isolating or too scared to travel.
It’s going to be tough times ahead, but where all the same boat so I’m not too worried. What will be will be. Lets just hope we get through this safely and I’m sending you and your loved ones my best wishes.
23 March – 30 March 2020| Uber £175.45| Bolt £159.38 | Ola £359.45 |Total £694.24
This week, the UK went into lockdown with the government advising people to stay at home unless they are going out to do essential food shopping, one form of exercise a day and travelling to and from work if it is not possible to work from home.
We were advised by Uber that we were allowed to carry on working and because I don’t qualify for the self employed grant I have had no choice but to carry on working.
With all the travel restrictions and the amount of people that were unable to work I went into this week with really low expectations, but it was surprisingly a good week.
In total, I worked less than 35 hours and earned just under £700 which averaged about £20 hour. I worked from around 5:30 am to around 10:30 am and did the odd couple of hours twice in the night as well.
The mornings have been busy enough with people going to work but the reason I’ve been able to hit about £100 every morning was because most trips have been long journeys with zero traffic. Workers who would normally take public transport to work have been taking cabs due to the reduced service and probably to adhere to the social distancing advise.
If you are still driving on the apps but have really struggled this week, which seems to be the consensus among drivers, I would advise you change your shift and start working early mornings from 5 am onwards. From 10am onwards it’s really not worth the time and from what I’ve seen it’s pretty dead for the rest of the day after that.
March started of with a bang where I earned just under £1200 a week for the first 2 weeks. I had finally managed to put certain things in place which meant that I could start work early morning and work uninterrupted until I hit my daily target of at least £200. This meant that £1200 a week was easily achievable even with taking the whole of Sunday off. Everything was starting to fall into place as I was starting to benefit from all the hard work and time I had put into this since I started and importantly I was really enjoying my work.
With all the hate online about being a Private Hire Driver, how it is slave labour, how you can’t make money, how you cant have a life, how the apps take advantage of you ect ect…. I was finally able to stick two fingers up at these people and be able to prove that they are wrong and to show people that are thinking about joining, newbies and drivers that are struggling, that it is possible to make this work. Not just make it work though but to earn good money and enjoy it at the same time.
Unfortunately, the Corona Virus has come along and slammed the brakes on all the progress but it is hard to get upset.
What this pandemic has highlighted is that health is the number one priority, happiness should be a strong second and money a distant third.
I am grateful to still be able to earn something as there are millions of people now unemployed and if it’s just enough to keep me and my family afloat then that’s fine. Being able to work a few hours in the morning and spend the rest of the day with the family has been great and I hope you are enjoying doing the same thing to.
